The growth of the remote sensing technology has
provided an important tool for resources planning. This technology when integrated with
conventional techniques provides information more speedily and at a lesser cost.
Moreover, the records of the terrain can be
achieved in the laboratory in convenient modes and can be reused whenever required.
Recognizing the importance of Remote Sensing technology in planned development of its vast
under-developed and inaccessible areas, the Government of India has drawn up an ambitious
Space Programme, which is being executed by the Department of Space, Government of India.
The Government of Madhya Pradesh, aware of the
vast potential of the natural resources in the State and eager to develop a scientific
system of monitoring and management of its natural resources, established a State level
Remote Sensing Applications Centre at Bhopal under the umbrella of M.P. Council of Science
& Technology in 1984. This Centre has grown into one of the largest State Centres
in the country.
