Department of Space (DOS), Govt. of India in collaboration with respective Remote Sensing Centers of the State Govt. has taken up a programme to establish National (Natural) Resources Information System (NRIS) in the country. The main objective of NRIS is to cater to the information needs of the planners and decision makers at District, State and National levels for natural resources development planning. 

The NRIS is a nation-wide network of spatial information system nodes. These nodes will be interlinked with each other under a Centre-State-District hierarchy. Each NRIS node is being built around a GIS core and would include an integrated database consisting of both spatial and non-spatial data elements on natural resources, infrastructure and socio-economic aspects.
